GOOD news for cake and dessert lovers living in the Banawe area of Quezon City: Royale Patisserie, a cake shop owned and managed by talented young pastry chef Edward David Mateo, has opened shop at the corner of E. Rodriguez Sr. Blvd. and Banawe Ave. in Quezon City. It shares space with Mandarin Wok, a Chinese fast-food restaurant and milk tea shop owned by Lawrence Tan.
“I have always wanted to have a shop for my baked goodies,” says Chef Edward who, after graduating from Centro Escolar University, started supplying cakes to shops and accepting orders for wedding cakes as well as doing dessert catering.
Now, after three years, Chef Edward has finally realized one of his biggest dreams. He has partnered up with Lawrence, his former professor at CEU, for this joint venture which formally opened its doors to the public yesterday (July 3, 2013) morning. When the ribbon was cut at 10:00 a.m. and the doors were opened, the crowd – made up of special guests of both Mandarin Wok and Royale Patisserie, and of customers – came in and filled the area. The crowd managed to thin out after a while, but guests and customers kept coming in and out throughout the opening day. Many of them were trying out the food and the cakes, some of them were making price inquiries for future orders, but quite a number of them left with boxes of whole cakes with them. If it’s any indication of the future of the Mandarin Wok-Royale Patisserie business venture, it’ll be a smashing hit.
Royale Patisserie’s cake showcase carries both big whole cakes and small, individual serving type of cakes that are quite generous in size. On opening day, Chef Edward proudly displayed his best-sellers, which include Zuccrotto (chocolate dome cake with berries), Pistachio New York Style Cheesecake, Chocolate Opera Coffee Gateau and Triple Chocolate Black Forest Cake with Pitted Cherries. Each boasts of a luscious mousse or chocolate ganache over soft, fluffy biscuit or sponge. The flavors meld together beautifully and burst in your mouth.
Coming in at half past 2:00 p.m. after a lunch commitment in Greenhills, my husband Raff and I shared a slice of Pistachio New York Style Cheesecake, which turned out to be a marvelous piece of cake creation. Pistachio nuts are a big favorite of both of us, and Chef Edward’s cheesecake combined the richness and exquisite flavors of cream cheese and sour cream to make it top of the line and top favorite. Chef Edward also took us on a tour of the second floor, where a demo kitchen has been set in place and cooking and baking classes will soon be offered. Chef Edward, of course, will be handling the baking classes.
Other cakes offered by Royale Patisserie include Mango Surprise, Chocolate Truffle Cake and Orange Chocolate Cake. Each small cake retails between Php150 and Php190, while the big whole cakes are priced between Php780 and Php1,100, depending on the flavor. The patisserie also serves a whole range of cupcakes – Red Velvet Cupcake, Chocolate Caramel Cupcake with Chocolate Mousse Frosting, Citrus Cupcake, Blueberry Cupcake and Oreo Peanut Butter Cupcake – all iced uniquely and beautifully and retailing at Php40 to Php45 per piece.
