GOOD news to pizza lovers in the metro: Global Restaurant Concepts Inc. (GRCI) has just declared August 15, 2013, as National Pizza Day in all California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) stores in the Philippines – and the big celebration means that next Thursday, August 15, CPK will be on a day-long Buy 1, Take 1 pizza promotion. If you buy one pizza, you get another one for free, so it’s like paying only half the price or getting two pizzas for the price of one.
California Pizza Kitchen’s big guns – Archie Rodriguez, Manuel Zubiri and Griffith Go – made this announcement over lunch today (August 6, 2013) at CPK’s new branch on the ground floor of Eastwood Mall in Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City. This is actually the second time that CPK has declared a National Pizza Day. The first time was last year.
“We thought of it as a thanksgiving to our customers, whose patronage for the past 16 years of CPK’s existence in the Philippines we truly appreciate. It’s one big Thank-You day for us,” says Zubiri, who also intimates that last year’s National Pizza Day turned out to be a huge success.
Last year, CPK sold over 1,000 pizzas per branch, and people were really lining up to avail of the promotion. So, with 10 to 11 CPK stores in operation this year, Zubiri is estimating about 10,000 pizzas to be sold on National Pizza Day this year.
There are five pizza variants that are included in the National Pizza Day promo of CPK this year: Untraditional Cheese Pizza (mozzarella, fresh mozzarella and tomato sauce); Hawaiian Pizza (pineapple, Canadian bacon, slivered scallions, mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce); Wild Mushroom Pizza (shiitake, abalone and white mushrooms, garlic olive oil, slivered scallions, mozzarella, Romano and Parmesan cheeses, served with a sprinkling of mushroom olive oil); Garlic Chicken Pizza (roasted garlic, grilled chicken, sweet caramelized onion, fresh mozzarella, Parmesan, slivered scallions and crushed black pepper); and Caprese Pizza (basil cashew pesto, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh mozzarella, topped with fresh basil leaves and Grana Padano Parmesan, served with extra virgin olive oil).
Order one and choose one that you can dine on or take out for free.
Members of the food media got to sample at least two of these pizzas over lunch today in the company of the CPK executives. At our table, which my husband Raff and I shared with Interaksyon’s Francine Medina Marquez and Peter Marquez, we got to taste the Hawaiian Pizza and the Wild Mushroom Pizza. Since I love mushrooms, my favorite was the Wild Mushroom Pizza, which had a combination of three kinds of mushrooms and no meat. It had just the right flavor, nothing was overpowering, and the crust was good even when the pizza had been sitting on the table for a while. We also had a Combo Salad and Portobello Mushroom Ravioli to go with our pizzas, with a huge Turtle Sundae capping our meal.
So, mark your calendar, and save the date, August 15, 2013, for an overload on good gourmet pizza. Pizza lovers shouldn’t miss National Pizza Day at CPK.
