Aliwan Fiesta 2018:
A Visual Extravaganza

The Sinulog Festival of Cebu

The Sinulog Festival Float of Cebu won runner-up honors in the Best Float Competition, while Shaila Bae Rebortera was second runner-up in the Reyna ng Aliwan competition.

FESTIVALS with grand parades, colorful costumes, upbeat music and exciting dance movements are a great crowd-drawer. This is why almost every region, province, even city or municipality in the country has its own annual festival, which reflects its own culture, history and traditions. Festivals effectively draw tourists, both local and foreign, to the place, so people travel extensively just to catch these visual spectacles.

But imagine if there’s one festival that gathers different festivals from different parts of the country, including major ones like the Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo, the Panagbenga Festival of Benguet and the Sinulog Festival of Cebu—complete with parade, dance competition and float competition!

Aliwan Fiesta, an annual event organized by Manila Broadcasting Corporation every April, owns the distinction of being The Philippines’ Grandest Fiesta because it brings together more than 15 festivals of the Philippines in a street dance competition, float competition and beauty pageant. Highlight of the three-day event is the grand parade, which starts at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park and ends at the Aliw Theater in the Star City Complex in Pasay City, where the competition heats up and the grand awarding takes place.

The festival began in 2003 and was so successful that it became an annual event that everyone looked forward to every summertime. This year was no different. Taking place from April 26 to 28, 2018, this year’s edition, the 16th in a row, once again drew crowds.

The grand finals of the Reyna ng Aliwan 2018 had all the elements of a full-fledged beauty pageant, and all the contestants—local beauty queens and muses—were worthy of the crown. But after the different competitions, Chelsea Fernandez (representing the Sangyaw Festival of Tacloban City) brought home the prestigious title. Chanel Mistyca Corpuz (representing the Abrenian-Kawayan Festival of Abra) placed first runner-up. Second runner-up honors, however, went to three lovely ladies—Lady Justerinnie Santos (Singkaban Festival of Bulacan), Ashanti Shane Ervas (Niyogyugan Festival of Quezon), and Shaila Mae Rebortera (Sinulog Festival of Cebu).

Of the seven special awards given out to the Reyna ng Aliwan 2018 contestants, three went to the grand winner, Chelsea Fernandez, who took home the Best in Evening Gown, Best in Swimsuit and Miss White Rose awards. Second runner-up Lady Justerinnie Santos and Shaila Mae Rebortera won the Best in Festival Costume and Miss Unique Smile special awards, respectively. The other winners were Ella Mariz Cayabyab of the Boling-Boling Festival of Catanauan, Quezon (Miss Photogenic) and Novie Shane Leonerio of the Tuna Festival of General Santos City (Miss Friendship).

Buttery Garlic Prawns
(Anchor)

Buttery Garlic Prawns, an Anchor recipe which I cooked

Buttery Garlic Prawns, an Anchor recipe which I cooked

PRAWN dishes never fail to impress. They have an umami flavor that pleases the palate. They go well with other seafood but are also good on their own. Simply sauté them in a little butter with garlic, season with salt and pepper, throw in some herbs, and you’ve got a great tasting dish.

I personally like to cook with prawns (or shrimps). I add them to almost everything—pancit, pasta, stir-fried vegetables, paella, fried rice, seafood stews, soups and salads. I also like to cook dishes that have them as main ingredient, such as gambas, cereal prawns, salted egg prawns, shrimp popcorn, chili prawns.

Last week, I learned a new prawn recipe. Failing to attend an event put together by Anchor’s dairy products, publicist Annie Ringor sent me a set of Anchor products with recipes that make use of Anchor dairy products, such as Anchor Shredded Mozzarella, Anchor Shredded Cheddar, Anchor Grated Parmesan, Anchor Cheddar Block, Anchor Cream Cheese Spread, Anchor Whipping Cream, Anchor Full Cream Milk Powder, Anchor Full Cream UHT Milk, Anchor Low Fat UHT Milk and Anchor Family Milk. One of these recipes was Buttery Garlic Prawns, which immediately caught my attention because the recipe was simple but I was really sure that the dish would turn out really flavorful. So I kitchen-tested it, and, true enough, it met up to expectations.

50 grams Anchor Butter, softened
2-3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
salt to taste
1 Tbsp. oil
1 pc. red chili, seeds removed and finely chopped
1 kg. prawns, peeled, with tail segment intact
1 Tbsp. finely chopped parsley

1. Mix the softened butter with the garlic and a generous sprinkle of salt.
2. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Pour in the oil, then add butter, chili and prawns.
3. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, turning at times until the prawns are pink and cooked through.
4. Sprinkle with parsley and a little extra salt to serve.

Serves 4.

There’s a Whole Lot to Love
with Anchor Dairy Products

Anchor's wide range of dairy products

Anchor’s wide range of dairy products

ANCHOR is a brand that’s trusted for its quality butter. Used by discriminating chefs and homemakers and preferred by bakers, Anchor Butter, both the Salted and Unsalted variants, turn out flavorful savory dishes and refreshingly delightful baked products. But Anchor is not just about butter, as the brand also carries a wide range of dairy products, such as Anchor Shredded Mozzarella, Anchor Shredded Cheddar, Anchor Grated Parmesan, Anchor Cheddar Block, Anchor Cream Cheese Spread, Anchor Whipping Cream, Anchor Full Cream Milk Powder, Anchor Full Cream UHT Milk, Anchor Low Fat UHT Milk and Anchor Family Milk.

Precisely to remind consumers that Anchor has all these healthy and quality products, the leading dairy brand recently hosted a press event, #AWholeLotToLove, at Single Origin Rockwell in Makati City.

The event introduced the rich story behind Anchor, which is a brand owned and produced by Fonterra, a cooperative owned by 10,500 farming families in New Zealand. It also emphasized why Anchor dairy products are healthy and good for everyone, with New Zealand being one of the few places in the world where cows are grass-fed all year round, thus ensuring that the milk produced by these cows are naturally rich in antioxidants. Dairy products are also a natural superfood that contains over 200 nutrients and happens to be one of the richest food sources of Calcium and Vitamin D. Add to these the fact that its New Zealand farmer family owners have committed themselves to the strictest standards of quality control through regular on-farm testing and independent farm and environmental assessments. One of the ways by which it maintains its quality is the practice of its tanker drivers in collecting milk samples from every farm they visit to test their quality. After all, Anchor aims to be the world’s most trusted source of dairy nutrition in the world, and the fact that its products do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is working strongly in its favor.
