EVERYBODY needs a break to rest, relax and recharge. If you don’t take a break, it eventually takes a toll on your body. So I recently took a much needed break and checked in at The Richmonde Hotel Ortigas with my husband Raff just to lounge around and enjoy the nice, quiet and comfortably air-conditioned environment.
Yes, I did bring my laptop with me, and, yes, I tried to work on an article while Raff watched cable TV, but my laptop was acting up so I ended up lounging around the one-bedroom suite that we occupied. I curled up in bed watching a food show on my own cable channel, as Raff watched sports events on his own cable TV in the receiving area. I popped in on him quite a few times, joining him for a short period to catch up on what he was watching. The Richmonde Hotel Ortigas has been around for a while now, so its rooms had a cozy “lived in” feel to it that made you feel right at home.
Since it was a weekend, my elder sister Mary and my brother-in-law Nick came over in the afternoon, and it was bonding time for us sisters as she went for a swim in the hotel’s indoor heated pool and I accompanied her there and just watched from the sidelines, getting comfy on the lounge chair by kicking off my slippers and tucking my legs in, Buddha style, and sitting back. I consciously left my cel phone in the room. I just wanted to relax and clear my mind and just laze around. It felt good to be doing nothing for a change, and I found myself humming Bruno Mars’ “Today, I swear I’m not doing anything…”
My sister was enjoying a leisurely swim, crossing the entire stretch of the pool doing breast strokes and ‘doggie’ strokes. I asked if she could do backstrokes, and she tried. Richmonde’s swimming pool was her favorite pool, because it was warm and it was indoors, so there was no fear of rain or cold, strong winds. She had a good swim before the guys came down and joined us. I wanted to try the treadmill in the gym, which stood next to the pool, but I didn’t bring my rubber shoes and sandals were not allowed. Tough luck.
After my sister had a refreshing shower in the room, we all went out and walked to nearby SM Megamall. I brought my laptop along to have it checked. We walked around, then had a delightful Ebi Tempura Bento dinner at Yoshinoya before walking back to Richmonde. My sister and my brother-in-law then said good-bye and left. I was happy to have had the opportunity to spend some leisurely bonding time with them tucked into my own staycation with Raff. An hour or so more of cable TV, and we called it a day and hit the bed early – again, for a change.
Overnight stays at Richmonde Hotel Ortigas, as in any other hotel, come with buffet breakfast the morning after, and this was something that Raff always looked forward to since breakfast was our favorite meal of the day. So I woke up early, and we went down to Richmonde Café on the second floor for breakfast. Richmonde Café’s breakfast buffet spread was always good. It didn’t have excessive selections, which was good, because you couldn’t try everything anyway – and you shouldn’t even try to do that because that would be gluttony and it wouldn’t be good for you. Richmonde Café’s buffet spread was just right.
As usual, Raff and I started with a small platter of fresh fruits and salad. It’s always good to have fresh fruits and garden fresh salad first thing in the morning because it packs fiber into your system and cleanses it of toxins before you take in anything else. Then we had Tomato, Mushroom and Cheese Omelette made at the Egg Station, and enjoyed it with Smoked Milkfish and Vegetable Fried Rice. There’s a whole lot more on the buffet table, including Chicken Sausage, Pancit Canton, Pork Siomai, Hash-browns, salads, cheeses, breads and pastries, interesting desserts, even assemble your own Congee from the Congee Station. I had breakfast with my favorite hot cup of Cappuccino, and it was all good.
Since my laptop had already been fixed, I went back to my usual ‘workaholic’ self when we got back to the room and worked on an article, albeit at a leisurely pace only. By the time we had to check out, I had fully enjoyed my Richmonde staycation.
